Who we are

Die Gitarrenwerkstatt (the guitar workshop) are Erik Krause, Michael Berstecher and our beautiful workshop in Freiburg...

Erik Krause

was born 1961. Inspired by Tibor Ehlers he began making instruments in 1979. Since 1980 he worked as a repair man in a little music shop in Pforzheim/Germany. In 1983 he met Rolf Eichinger, who taught him the principles of spanish guitarmaking. Short time later he got to know Franz Butscher and founded with him die Gitarrenwerkstatt in Freiburg. Franz Butscher now lives in Orgiva near Granada/Spain, where ha has an own workshop and makes wonderful guitars.

Michael Berstecher

was born in 1973 and plays the guitar since he was ten. In 1995 he started making guitars with instruction of Erik Krause, after he had learned the fundamentals in a woodworking school. His second instrument was already bought and is played by a member of the Freiburger Gitarrenquartett.

Our Room

is situated in an old factory building on the second floor on the north side. The relativly high Room has windows on three sides, which makes it fairly bright without the risks of direkt exposure to sunlight. There are more studios and workshops in the House and the creative, cooperative and pleasent atmosphere helps very much to do our concentrated and precise work.

We would like to give special thanks to our neighbour, the graphic artist Bernhard Kunkler, who again and again helped us with advice and with his computers without getting impatient. We would also like to thank his daughter Fanny. She drew our Logo at the age of nine.
